A Twist of fate and a few hours are all the separated two soldiers: one soldier's story ended in tragedy and the other soldier's story continues on today trying his best to honor the other. This sounds like a movie, but it is the true story of my life and how it changed one fateful day in 1991.

"Faded Jeans to Army Greens" tells the true story of Mike Travis and his journey from Basic Training to Operation Desert Storm. Filed with pictures, letters home, and diary entries, this book will show you the happy, sad, and sometimes hilarious world of military life.

Excerpt from the book:

"... The week had taken its toll and I was tired, very tired. About five miles into the march, I was dozing a lot, with my head falling to my chest before I jerk up awake. It was a straight road, so not much to really see or do, just the constant barrage of cadence.  And, then it happened, I dozed again with my head falling to my chest and my boot caught on a slight bump in the road, causing me to trip and fall forward. I went to the ground, but the worst part was my rucksack also flipped forward and over my head. This left me stranded on the ground, on my knees, stuck to the ruck, but unable to flip it on my back, because it weighed so much. I couldn’t move, sort of like a turtle stuck on its back. Meanwhile, soldiers were going around me trying not to get in trouble for breaking formation. Finally, a fellow soldier realized my predicament and flipped my rucksack back on my back, and I was able to get up to my knees. By now, the rest of the platoon was another 300 meters ahead of me, still marching. And, coming up fast was the drill sergeant walking slower with all the slackers who had fallen out. I was off and running. Do you know how hard it is to run with a 50-pound rucksack on your back? Okay, so I waddled back into the formation ..."
